of Tehran, the Sorbonne in Paris, UCLA and most recently the
University of Washington. His international performances and
recordings are too numerous to list but include joined
releases with well-known Iranian vocal artists Sima Bina and

and Reza Mazloomi
will accompany him on Tombak and Daf
(Persian Goblet and Frame drums). |

As it has become
an annual tradition, the seventh Portland Iranian Festival
took place on the first Saturday of August at the campus of
Portland State University in downtown Portland, Oregon. This
festival that was first organized seven years ago attracts
thousands of Portlanders every year.

5:30 — 6:30pm Persian Music and Instruments
Pouria Sayrafi, musician from Iran, will introduce you
to Persian music, sampling styles from traditional to pop.
Several Persian instruments will be demonstrated, with
listening samples: a Tar, Setar, Santure and a Tombak.
6:30 — 7:00pm Persian Hand Drum demonstration
An initiation to the Persian hand drum, the Tombak,
with Pouria Sayrafi.
Feel free to bring your own hand drum (any kind).

Portland
resident, Dr. Dariush Dolat-shahi,
who's Opera was performed as part of PICA'S first annual TBA
festival, will be returning for his fourth solo performance.
Drawing from the rich Persian culture, Dariush will be
performing on two native stringed instruments (Lutes) of
Iran, Accompanied by
Pouria Sayrafi
and
Faramarz Mehrdadfar
on percussion. A dual CD collection will be released at the
